Nostalgic Meal Order
Nostalgic Meal Order is a mural by Penang dead and mute artist, Louis Gan. It is painted on the wall of Pinang's Pinang, which is at 9 & 9A, Kinta Lane, Penang. To get there, take a Rapid bus of 101/ 102/ 103/ 104/ 304 at the bus stop at Macalister Road.
It depicts a young Nyonya maiden receiving a basket of a meal from the hawker on the street below.
The scene recalls life in George Town of the early 20th century, when upper-crust Nyonyas lived cloistered from public view, and conducted their meal shopping via baskets in which they place the cash. The hawker places the meal into the basket along with the change. Louis Gan vividly captures this snapshot of a time past for posterity.
The features of both the young lady and the rotund hawker are beautifully rendered, especially the priceless facial expression on the jovial bespectacled hawker.
